New camera/ Ducklings are awesome.

I got a new camera!  The one I got for Christmas (the Canon Powershot SX20IS) is awesome but I wanted to try my hand at DSLR's.  I got a Canon EOS Rebel T1i (500D) and I took it out to a pond this afternoon for some testing... I only tried the auto options and a zoom lens that I bought on sale from Amazon.

I was surprised and excited to find four Redheads in the pond...

By the way, is this a pale Mallard mama or something else completely?

So far so good with the camera.. It takes pictures soooo much faster than my other camera that I ended up taking 575 pictures in less than an hour.  This is no good!  I'll end up with 5000 after a day out and about!

  1. Hi Jen, those ducklings are adorable. The pale duck does appear to be a mallard. In park settings or barnyards mallards often are lighter, darker, or have strange color patterns, likely due to inbreeding or hybridization. Ducks and other birds in more wild environments can also look strange sometimes because of genetic mutations or other factors.

It looks like you're having fun with your new camera. Which lens are you using?

I went to the Ridgefield Refuge today. I saw only one owl. The other usual suspects were there and I helped a turtle find its way to a slough. It tried to pee on me but I'm wise to that behavior. :)

There's a Wood Pewee hanging out along the road near the owls, along with WB Nuthatches, Brown Creepers, a male Black Headed Grosbeak, and the Hairy Woodpeckers appear to be feeding nestlings.

The rabbits were being their usual playful selves. There was a young one that was running around kicking up its heels and acting goofy.

I'll be going there again today (Saturday) and will take my mother with me. On Sunday I'll be going up into the Gifford Pinchot National Forest to hobnob with butterflies and other critters.
