I went up to Ridgefield yesterday afternoon after almost two whole weeks away... It was great to be back up there...

I guess I woke up this Pied-billed Grebe..
Is this the season for sleeping raccoons? I keep seeing them...
This little bunny was chomping on grass next to the Kiwa Trail.
I didn't get any good shots of this guy's beak, so I'm not positive whether it's a Downy or a Hairy.
This Sora crossed the Kiwa Trail just in front of me. According to a nearby couple, another one crossed just behind me while I took this picture. Weird.
I really like watching the Brown Creepers but their constant hopping around does not help my photos...
I am guessing this is some kind of flycatcher?
Now THAT is a mouthful!

I would have watched these guys longer but I had to find out what that "racket" was behind me... I thought some kid was banging on something....
Nope! It was a gorgeous Pileated Woodpecker going at this tree!!! So cool!!!!
I tried to creep slowly around the tree to get a good profile shot but the trail was too close to this tree and he figured out my plan... He crept around to the other side of the tree, then flew to a farther tree, then I couldn't spot him anymore... But I could still hear him.
Cedar Waxwings seemed to love these pretty bushes...
I saw a few trees just filled with Purple Martins...

Whow..what a great afternoon you had Jen. The Raccoon looks well 'chilled out'. Fabulous shots of the Bittern AND you watched it 'booming'...that's a rare sight over here. FAB.

ReplyDeleteToo bad you're not sure what kind of woodpecker you saw, Jen. Without the ability to put things into scale, it's difficult to be sure of the ID. The two species you mention are significantly different in size. I always try to remember the size of birds I see that I'm unsure of. RE the Osprey, I recall seeing a pbaser that had processed a similar shot taking out a distracting wing. I've tried to visualize my image that way, but wouldn't consider doing it. The fish is the primary focus anyway. Continue your great observations.
