Swift Watch 2010.

I finally made it over to Chapman School in NW Portland last night to see all the swifts!  Every year thousands of Vaux's Swifts use the chimney at the school for roosting and it is quite a sight to see....

I got there around 6:00 and there were already some swifts gathering overhead...  The sky was a bit ominous but we managed to not get rained on..

More and more swifts joined the others and flew in huge circles above the school...

It was really cool to watch... They eventually began to enter the chimney...

I am really curious how many were there.. Or even how the heck people are able to count them!

I'm so glad I finally got to see them!

  1. That is a fascinating picture. Did they all fly into that stack? No way!

  2. I keep meaning to take my boys over there to see it. I thought I read that they are there pretty much until the end of September. Is that right?

  5. Fascinating, and such a coincidence. On Tuesday on Putney Mountain, a woman visited who was from Portland, now living in Vermont. I don't remember how we got on the subject, but she described this flight of swifts, and the chimney - must be the same place in your photos. Oh, the world is so small, and there are so few degrees of separation. So why don't we all get along better.
