Recent birds...

Here are some random birds (and mammals) from the last week or so....

 Muskrat, Force Lake 09-26-10

Pied-billed Grebe and Hooded Mergansers, Ridgefield NWR 09-29-10

Hooded Merganser, Ridgefield NWR 09-29-10

Great Blue Heron, Ridgefield NWR 09-29-10

At Ridgefield a few days ago I watched an American Kestrel repeatedly dive into these corn stalks only to be chased away by Red-winged Blackbirds.  He did this maybe a dozen times before he disappeared.  Each time all I could think was what a crazy bastard!

Yellow-rumped Warbler, Oaks Bottom Wildlife Refuge 10-04-10

And lastly... It was hard to hear the birds over all the squirrels at Oaks Bottom!

  1. I haven't seen a Black-throated Grey Warbler in a long time! I love that shot of the heron with the crazy "hat".

Will you be going to Ridgefield's Birdfest? If you do, stop by and say hi. We'll be selling our notecards at the marketplace.

  5. The photos on your last three posts (I'm catching up again) are just superb. To name just a few: the great blue, the hooded female (seems darker than in the east), the kestrel (wonder what it was going after - a bug, a mouse? - anyway, don't mess with the red-wings!) - and the bittern series - wow! - I'm just glad to get a look at one, they are so secretive most of the time.
