California Part II (Pillar Point, Abbotts Lagoon Trail, Point Reyes)

Last Saturday afternoon, after a trip to Alcatraz, my friend and I headed to Pillar Point Harbor in Half Moon Bay.  Again, the birds were out in full force....

Willet

 Black-bellied Plover

 Marbled Godwit

Then I asked them to all get together for a group shot.  The Willet declined, but some Sanderlings joined in...

We walked to the other side of the jetty and found more birds...  Interesting mixed flocks of shorebirds were flying by constantly...

Black Oystercatcher

The late afternoon sun really made the scene beautiful.....

On Sunday morning we headed to Point Reyes National Seashore despite the dreary forecast.... It was drizzling at the Bear Valley Visitor Center when we arrived.

The quail did not seem to mind...

Amazingly that was the last of the rain... We drove to the Abbotts Lagoon trailhead and found mostly sunny skies and warm temperatures...

And lots of cows and deer!  It was definitely one of the prettiest trails I've ever walked...

In the lagoon were quite a few birds....

Red-throated Loon

Ruddy Duck

Ruddy Duck

 Eared Grebe

Did I mention it was beautiful??

All along the trail (and everywhere we went in California) were White-crowned Sparrows:

On our way back along the trail we spooked this quail...

Perched on some barbed wire was this bird:

A Say's Phoebe!

Further along the trail was a Black Phoebe too...

What a fantastic trail... I can't wait to go back again!
