Youngins.

Yesterday morning I was kept relatively entertained by some crows in my yard.  There were some juveniles begging for food and I actually broke up a piece of bread for 'em so they would stop perching on the tree with my feeders.  I don't usually do that, but it was Dave's Killer Bread and I figured it was better for them than the fruit loops my neighbors feed them.

Today I came home from work to find Jake sitting on my front porch.  Apparently he jumped out my bedroom window after the fan got pushed out the window.  He's never done anything like it before, so I'm not sure why he did it.  Ralph didn't follow him.  I'm still scratching my head over it, but glad he didn't go anywhere!  So as a reward for not running away, I took the boys to Kelley Point Park for some birds and some swimming.

There were lots of young birds around...

Bewick's Wren?

 Bewick's Wren?

There tons of young wrens around and my first thought had been Pacific Wrens, then I thought House Wrens, but then I saw this Bewick's Wren nearby taking a nice dust bath and thought maybe they're Bewick's Wrens...  This is a bad photo but you can see the dirt flying...

Good times.  On a side note, I just noticed one of my yard squirrels has an injury.  I have named him "butt hole" because I already have a "sad squirrel" and well, there's a hole on his butt:

Alright, that's all I got.   There's a bedroom window/fan situation I need to figure out now.

  1. The juveniles in the Song Sparrow pictures look kind of funny to me. Any chance they could be Brown-headed Cowbirds?

  4. Wonderful post filled with terrific images! Love all the photographs of the youngins. The dust bath and happy swimming lab photos brought a big smile to my face. Poor pain in the butt squirrel ...

  5. Butt hole. Ha. I wonder if that hole is from a bot-fly larva type thing. Your baby sparrows are cowbirds, but that young wren is tough!

  7. Oops about the song sparrows! They were being fed by song sparrows, but I forget that does not necessarily mean they are sparrows too... Thanks everyone for the help!
