When the sun popped out yesterday afternoon, I ran out the door with the dogs before I was even sure where we were going. I was driving towards Vancouver when I remembered the good birds at Steigerwald Lake NWR, and the fact that dogs are allowed on the dike trail along the south side of the refuge. I've never walked the trail but a surprisingly sunny afternoon seemed like the perfect time to check it out.
Containers. With eyes. Creepy.
I watched a male harrier hunting in the first big field we passed. The wind was incredible but he just kept on trucking like it was totally calm.
Farther down the trail there was a Say's Phoebe perched on the fence. I have seen them several times but never so close-up.
The trail is closed off after a couple miles where the dike continues on through private property. The dogs and I turned around and quickly found two female Mountain Bluebirds bug-catching from the fence we had just passed.
There had been just one female in this area before, so I am glad she has a friend now. On the way back I stopped to watch the phoebe again...
The clouds started blowing in at this point and we made our way back to the car. Good times!!

Those containers look like crocheted Snoopys or VW Beetles...
ReplyDeleteGreat close looks at the phoebe and bluebird! So nice when they cooperate.
Funny I actually have a crocheted Snoopy somewhere from my grandma. Definitely similar.
DeleteIt looks like a giant hungry hungry hippo factory there. Good thing that didn't deter the birds. Lovely photos.
ReplyDeleteI think you nailed it! Giant hungry hungry hippos=terrifying!
DeleteBeautiful pix, love the Says Phoebe! My one Says Phoebe pic is a tiny dot of fuzz -- fun day (in spite of the creepy, albeit colorful, aliens)
ReplyDeleteHa, that's how most of my phoebe shots are!
DeleteFunny containers with eyes, they do look creepy. I love all your bird shots and the phoebe and bluebirds are beautiful and my favorites. Happy Birding, Jen!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Eileen!
DeleteGreat close up of the Says Phoebe, it sure is a beauty!
