Patagonia & Beatty's Orchard.

We left Madera Canyon in the afternoon and headed east to Patagonia, where our first stop was at the Paton's...

The Paton's is a house with a yard filled with feeders and birds, famous for hummingbirds, but we saw lots of other great birds too.

 Gila Woodpecker

Lazuli Buntings

Violet-crowned Hummingbird

Lark Sparrow

We made a stop at the roadside rest area but didn't have a ton of luck, just more regular southeast AZ birds.  At Patagonia Lake State Park we set up our tent for the night and did some exploring.  Surprise, more good birds!

 Verdin

 Vermilion Flycatcher

 Brown-headed Cowbirds

Black Vultures

 Black Vulture

The next morning we headed to Miller Canyon to visit the Beatty's hummingbird feeders and to hike around the canyon.  An Arizona Woodpecker was up in a tree near where we parked...

The walk up to the feeders was loud- the Beatty's have tons of guinea hens, chickens, and dogs.

Alright, now for the hummers.. If you thought I was bad at ID-ing flycatchers then my hummingbird ID's will really make you laugh.  I am used to calling everything an Anna's until April, and then deciding between Anna's and Rufous, which is not exactly a tough decision.

 Broad-tailed?

Same bird

 Black-chinned Hummingbird

 Broad-tailed female?

 Broad-billed Hummingbird

 Blue-throated Hummingbird

 Magnificent Hummingbird

So, yeah, Beatty's hummingbird feeders are pretty darn impressive.

Good times!  More from Miller Canyon coming soon!

  1. Yeah, Beatty's is pretty sick...I've seen someone cry from all the hummingbirds. No joke. I'm glad Paton's is still going...I've spent a lot of time in that yard.

You are correct on all your hummingbirds.

    1. Sweet, yeah I left out most of the females so I'd have a better chance at getting them right. I remembered you telling me about someone crying but couldn't remember which spot it was. I get it.
