It all started Wednesday when the temperatures plummeted and a chilly female Anna's Hummingbird started pestering me to defrost the feeder. She was taking shelter from the wind under my garage overhang, perching on my yard debris bags and sometimes my hubcap...
By yesterday morning we had several inches of snow and the wind had died down. I took the dogs on a long and quiet walk up to the river first thing, then joined my friend for some snow-birding around town.

As the snow picked up we decided to make one last effort for cranes, but instead found a field of Snow Geese! In the snow!
Nice to see one of the blue geese in the mix! A pretty perfect end to the snow day. Good times!! Oh and if you get bored, check out this trailer for another birding movie...
Birding in the snow is pretty gorgeous. Thanks for sharing! All my photos are of feeder birds and they're blurry. Wah.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful shots.
ReplyDeleteGetting to enjoy the scenery and the birds, without the chill--this is a good way for an Arizonan to do some vicarious winter birding. Thanks Jen!
It is nice to see that the west coast is getting some cold weather and snow like the east. Love the birds and scenic shots. The "penquin" is a cool sighting.. My favorite is the beautiful sapsucker. Happy Birding and have a great weekend.
ReplyDeleteNice photos! I like the Downy shots a lot. Looks like a fun adventure.
ReplyDeleteWow you got a lot of snow!!! OH that poor heron looks so cold! Its kindova cool change when snow comes around right? Love the RB-Sapsucker, we have the yellow here it doesn't have full redhead only a dot, we do get the Red Headed WP which has a lovely red head complete..
ReplyDeleteAmazing how that rare Penguin happened along when it did, its more rare than a Bigfoot photo!
Good stuff. That sapsucker kills me. I guess the eye ring is what differentiates your bird from a Greater Red-bellied Penguin?
